What is First Reconciliation?
First Reconciliation is an important step in our faith journey, especially for young children. It allows them to experience God’s love and forgiveness for the first time in a special way. As they learn in Sunday school, we all make mistakes and sometimes stray from our friendship with God. Through Reconciliation, children understand that God is always ready to welcome them back and help them grow closer to Him.
Before they receive their First Communion in Second Grade, experiencing this sacrament helps them prepare their hearts to fully embrace the love and grace that comes with receiving Jesus in the Eucharist. It’s a beautiful way for them to recognize God’s endless mercy and develop a lifelong habit of seeking forgiveness and building a strong relationship with Him.
What Is First Communion?
First Communion is a significant and joyful milestone for children in Second Grade, or older who have completed at least two years of Religious Education. During these years, they will have learned about Jesus’ immense love for us and the sacrifice He made through His death and resurrection. This education helps them understand that, through the Eucharist, they are receiving Jesus’ body and blood as a source of spiritual nourishment and understanding His presence in their lives as the source and summit of the Christian Faith. CCC 1324
By the time they receive their First Communion, children have been taught the importance of being part of the Church community. They learn how the Eucharist not only strengthens their relationship with Jesus but also unites them with the entire Church family. It’s a way for them to be active participants in their faith, growing in love and service to others. This sacrament helps them experience the joy of being a part of God’s family and encourages them to live out their faith in everyday life.

Who is First Communion For?
First communion is for children who have been baptized Catholic, and are currently in, or have already completed Second Grade.
Can My Child Participate Even If We Aren’t Catholic?
Yes! They will not be able to receive the sacraments at the end of the year unless they have been baptized catholic before the age of 7, or opt into the OCIC program but they are more than welcome to participate in the classes and learn more about the faith! Every year we have a number of kids registered to participate without receiving sacraments.
What Are The Expectations for the Parents?
At the beginning of the year every parent will receive a “Parent Pack” which contains everything you need to know for your child’s program including our security protocols, resources for you to continue their education at home.
The One main thing we ask of all of our parents is to go to mass with your child!
Can My Child Participate Even If They Aren’t Due For A Sacrament?
Absolutely! Most of our Third, Fourth, and Fifth graders are participating because they enjoy the program, even though they aren’t due for a sacrament! It is a great way to keep them involved in the church and they’ll learn something new every year.
What If My Child Can’t Make It To Every Session?
We encourage you to do your best but we will provide resources as needed to help ensure your child doesn’t fall behind! If they miss too many sessions we will offer a makeup session later in the year. We do take off for major holidays, and the month of December to avoid interfering with your travel plans!
Are There Other Opportunities For My Kids to Get Involved in the Church?
We are scheduling Kid Friendly Events throughout the year! We don’t have specific events scheduled at this moment but it will include things like a Family Game Night, and Kids Movie Day. If you have ideas for Kids programs outside of Sunday School please feel free to let us know! We are always open to suggestions.
