In the Roman Catholic Church, the use of incense in an expression of reverence and of prayer. it is a good way to add festivity or solemnity to a celebration. Incense may be used optionally in any form of Mass.
We are aware that some people have respiratory problems which are exacerbated at Masses using incense. The Cantor at Mass is also affected by incense in their space on the Sanctuary. With this in mind, we now limit the incense to more festive occasions as outlined below.
Incense must and will be used at any liturgical which includes the exposition and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament such as our weekly Thursday Adoration. Also, on Holy Thursday, at the Easter Vigil, and Christmas Eve.
We are likely to use incense at funerals, and any solemn Mass celebrated by a bishop. There may be other occasions for incense at the discretion of the Pastor on the following feasts:
Epiphany of the Lord
Easter Sunday
Pentecost Sunday
The Most Holy Trinity (Our Parish Feast Day)
The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi)
Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.
Incense may be used optionally, at Masses listed above, at the directions of the Mass Presider as follows:
a) During the Entrance Procession,
b) At the beginning of Mass, to incense the cross and altar,
c) At the procession before the Gospel and the proclamation of the Gospel,
d) After the bread and chalice have been placed on the altar, to incense the offerings, the cross, the altar, as well as the Priest and the people.
(General Instruction of the Roman Missal no. 276)
If you or any family member is adversely affected by incense, we suggest you consult this guide and avoid sitting in front if incense will be used during Mass.
